Congressman Bill Hefner was always a friend to education. During his tenure in Congress, he was a staunch ally of the National Education Association. He supported the Impact Aid Bill to relieve the financial stress on school systems near military installations.

Therefore, in 1992, it was no surprise that the Cumberland County Board of Education approached Congressman Hefner about the critical facilities needed in Cumberland County School System. Congressman Hefner was directly responsible for the specific funding of two Cumberland County Schools’ being included in the Defense Appropriations Bill. One of these schools is now known as Bill Hefner Elementary School.

On August 22, 1995, Bill Hefner Elementary School opened its doors to 952 excited students, 41 classroom teachers, 9 resource teachers and 24 teacher assistants. After over fifteen years in existence, Bill Hefner Elementary has established itself as an outstanding elementary school. With one of the finest academic programs in the region, Bill Hefner Elementary is one of many Cumberland County elementary schools to receive state recognition as a “North Carolina School of Distinction” and “North Carolina Exemplary School”.

Through continued support from the community and an outstanding faculty and staff, we, at Bill Hefner Elementary, will endeavor to always provide the best possible education for the future “Heroes” of tomorrow.
